A Trusted Advisor

Jim's pioneering market research into “Smart Highways” & Vehicle Telematics — i.e., Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) related to Commercial Vehicle Operations (CVO) — is referenced in senior executive publications such as A Governor's Guide to Intelligent Transportation Systems and was cited by Apogee Research as “…the most full discussion of [ITS/CVO] direct agency benefits…and penetration rates”. Other long-term impacts of Jim's insights can be seen in subsequent work by others such as within a variable pricing study for the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (2005), by supply chain researchers at both M.I.T. (2004) and California PATH (Partnership for Advanced Transit & Highways) in 2002, and via reference to Jim's work in the article Technologies for Logistics, which was published as part of the 2012 SIDT engineering conference in Europe.

Industry Recognition

Jim is a Leadership Fellow of the Eno Transportation Foundation (the national leader in policy & professional development for the transportation industry), having been named by them to their initial class of such honorees. Jim has also spoken about innovative transportation-related technologies during convention sessions at: the Transportation Research Board's Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. (part of the National Academy of Sciences and attended by 12,000+ transportation professionals from around the world); and the Intelligent Vehicle-Highway Society of America's Annual Meeting (now, ITS America and the ITS World Congress tradeshows). Elsewhere, he has presented at the the Purdue Road School Expo (established in 1914); and at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. where he spoke about the Federal role in commercializing high speed rail & MAGLEV system technology — primary research that Jim led while collaborating with international experts, including those from the French Embassy (home nation of the then world's fastest TGV bullet train), Capitol Hill, and from the public policy group of the American Society of Civil Engineers, among others. Jim also successfully served a term as elected Chair of the County Road Association of Michigan's statewide Roadsoft Asset & Safety Management Software Advisory Committee – a 22-person statewide advisory team and technical focus group guiding 3rd-party creators of innovative software designed to help Michigan's local agencies better use limited funding resources. During the first 9-months of Jim's leadership and outreach activities to decision-makers, use of this innovative product increased 77%.

Jim is also the author & primary facilitator of infrastructure telematics / operations plans that have effected positive change in 14 cities encompassing 21 million people; yielding local fuel savings, enhanced commercial transport productivity, cleaner air, and reduced incident congestion / driver frustration due to faster incident response via regional integrated traffic management, E-911 call centers, and enhanced emergency dispatch center coordination.
